As I thought about this range, I noticed one near constant factor in the selected chapters; legs. This starts in the chapter in which Rachel, Lucy and Esperanza are given beautiful shoes by another family. They proceed to totter around on their newly accessorized lower limbs, and of course get into trouble with them. Next, a significantly shorter chapter is dedicated to Esperanza dancing with her uncle, an activity using the lower limbs almost constantly, and worrying about her ugly shoes, articles of clothing often made to compliment the legs. Next is a chapter entitled "Hips" in which Rachel Lucy Esperanza and Nenny talk, sing, and argue about hips, while playing jump rope. I can think of no way in which that chapter could have been more focused on legs. What possible significance this recurring factor could have I have no idea, but I thought it was interesting.
